10,000 Black Interns: Chelsea Aba
This year, Russell-Cooke signed up to host two interns as part of the 10,000 Black Interns programme for the third year running. Each intern undertakes a six-week paid internship, rotating between a number of teams across the firm's broad practice.
The 10,000 Black Interns programme offers paid work experience across a wide range of sectors (including legal) each year, providing critical training and development opportunities. At present the plan is that 24 industries will provide 10,000 internships in aggregate over five years.
The firm welcomed its first intern, Chelsea Aba, earlier this month. Now halfway through her internship, she reflects on her experience so far and what she is hoping to get out of the remainder of her time with Russell-Cooke.
In my first weeks here, I sat in the corporate and commercial practice, who were very inviting and took me out for lunch on my first day, helping me get to know the team from the off. For my dissertation, I studied the effects on company law post-Brexit, and it has been fascinating seeing the theory come to life and to put what I learnt at University into practice. I have since moved onto the children and education team, where I have had the opportunity to attend two hearings. Helping the team prepare for court, and witnessing the hearings in action, was really interesting and solidified my belief that I have made the right choice in terms of the career I want to pursue."
Despite living my whole life in London, I had never spent any time in Putney or Kingston before interning with Russell-Cooke, both of which I love. I really enjoy walking across the bridge in Kingston, and being near the river. Everybody has been very friendly and welcoming, and I have greatly enjoyed seeing different aspects of the business so far. I have even attended a pizza party hosted by the corporate and commercial team, and will be joining a rowing event later this week! I am looking forward to seeing how my thoughts compare at the end to at the start of my internship, and how the experience informs the steps I want to take next in my career.”
Next month, Russell-Cooke will welcome Lucas Wallace who will intern with us from 19 August until 28 September.
