Associate Lui Asquith has been profiled in the 'Lawyer in the News' feature in Law Society Gazette, after representing TransActual and a young person in a judicial review challenging legislation on the restriction of puberty blockers.

The High Court ruled that emergency legislation by former Health Secretary Victoria Atkins in May 2024, which restricts the availability of puberty blockers to under 18s with gender dysphoria, was lawful. Lui outlines the claimants’ argument that the legislation was contrary to Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights and highlights the ramifications of the judgment on young people with gender dysphoria as well the wider implications on public law. Additionally, Lui discusses how they handle the media in high-profile cases, what led to their career in law as well as the highs and lows of their legal career.

The most immediate, practical implication of the judgment is that many young people seeking access to a timely prescription of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogues will be unable to access it. From a legal perspective, the court has significantly lowered the threshold for using the emergency procedure to ban a medicine without consultation.
