Russell-Cooke represents Khalsa Aid International in online defamation case
Law firm Russell-Cooke acted for Khalsa Aid International in its response to a derogatory, discriminatory and defamatory message posted on social media which raised serious and real reputational issues.
Khalsa Aid International is a UK-based NGO providing humanitarian aid in disaster areas and civil conflict zones around the world. The organisation has recently been providing aid to India during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Regulation partner Matt Bosworth contacted the responsible party, Inspiring Indian Women (UK) Limited, to set out factual inaccuracies of its message, the damage it had caused and the remedies sought by Khalsa Aid International. In response, the client received an unequivocal and unconditional letter of apology as well as a full retraction of the comments. In its statement, Inspiring Indian Women accepted full responsibility for the offensive tweet and reiterated its mission to empower and support women.
Matt Bosworth stated: “The matter demanded an immediate retraction not just because of the factual inaccuracies and discriminatory sentiment that was contained in the published message on Twitter but also to ensure that Khalsa Aid International defended its good name and reputation for both those that represent it and to their regulator, the Charity Commission.”
Khalsa Aid International is an existing client of Russell-Cooke's charity and social business team and has been a client of the firm since April 2020.
