The Legus European Internship: Daisy Greuter

4 min Read

In October 2023 we announced the launch of a new Legus European Internship, allowing a number of Russell-Cooke associates to spend a week in a European member firm, and for us to host their solicitors in turn. In the first of our blog series on the subject, we asked Daisy Greuter of Köster Advocaten in the Netherlands about her time interning with Russell-Cooke and what she's learnt from taking part in the programme.

Who are you and what is your role at Köster Advocaten?

My name is Daisy Greuter, and I have been working as an employment law attorney at Köster Advocaten in Haarlem for four years.

How did you become an intern at Russell-Cooke?

Köster Advocaten and Russell-Cooke are both members of the Legus International Network of Law Firms. Within this framework, an exchange programme has been established. As part of this initiative, I was invited to participate in a week-long exchange at Russell-Cooke. My colleague Suzanne Elzinga spent a week on exchange at Russell-Cooke last year, and her fascinating stories made me very enthusiastic, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to travel to Russell-Cooke this year.

What have you done during your week here?

I have done an incredible amount. Every day, I got to know a different team within the office. My schedule was as follows:

·       Monday: private client

·       Tuesday: family

·       Wednesday: employment

·       Thursday: real estate

·       Friday: DRG/regulation

Each team involved me in their daily practice. For instance, I conducted research on the validity of a no-content clause in a will, attended a family law hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice, and reviewed a lease agreement. Additionally, there was ample time to have extended lunches together, discussing how the international network is utilised and getting to know each other better.

What would you say are the benefits of this programme? What have you learned?

One of the most significant personal benefits of this programme has been the improvement of my English language skills. Initially, I felt a bit apprehensive about using English in various settings, but throughout the programme, I've become much more comfortable and confident. This has not only enhanced my ability to communicate effectively but has also been instrumental in my overall social development.

In terms of content, the programme has provided me with valuable insights into how things operate in England. I have gained a better understanding of the daily routines and practices, which has been fascinating.

Moreover, I've discovered numerous opportunities where the practices and perspectives of Köster Advocaten and Russell-Cooke can intersect and complement each other. This has opened my eyes to potential collaborations and innovations that can be explored between our two cultures, enhancing both professional and personal growth.

Overall, this programme has been incredibly enriching, both in terms of language proficiency and cultural awareness, and has laid a strong foundation for future interactions and opportunities.

How do you think this will benefit you in the future?

I think that my exchange will help me in the future by improving collaboration and strengthening the relationship with Russell-Cooke. Knowing who does what within the company facilitates cross-departmental and team collaboration.

Do you have any hidden talents?

During my studies, I worked as a makeup artist. I enjoy being creative in my free time, particularly with makeup. Next month, I have the opportunity to do makeup for another bride on her big day.

Who inspires you?

My grandmother, who was part of a family of a total of 11 children and grew up in Amsterdam during the Second World War. I have tremendous admiration for her boundless perseverance, for the warmth she extends to her loved ones, and her attentive listening ear.

What is the last book you read?

Of course, the Dutch Civil Code!

What would your dream weekend look like?

A weekend with family, good conversations, delicious food, and plenty of sunshine.

If you could have dinner with a famous person/character from film, book or TV, who would you choose?

Queen Maxima. Our queen is - in my opinion - a true icon. There is now also a series made about her, which is like ‘The Crown’, but the Dutch version. Hopefully, this will also be available in England as I can recommend the series to everyone!
