‘I applaud people in legal aid provision, but they do it at huge sacrifice’—The Times
Senior Partner John Gould has been featured in The Times ‘The Brief’ in conversation with Catherine Baksi.
The piece celebrates his long career in regulatory and disciplinary law, during which he has written practitioner’s textbooks and acted as adviser to the 2021 review of legal services regulation, and his almost 40 years leading Russell-Cooke during which time it has grown to more than 220 lawyers with a turnover of over £40 million a year.
In addition to discussing the high-profile cases he has been involved in, John Gould comments on the current landscape of his profession and the challenges facing those in legal aid provision. His commitment to social inclusion is informed by his own background growing up on a council estate in Bristol.
Under Gould’s leadership, Russell-Cooke has made a commitment to ensuring that 5 per cent of its revenue is derived from legal aid work because, he says, “it’s a good thing to do and it improves the values of the firm”.
He steps down from the position of Senior Partner on 30 June but will remain a partner and take on the role of Chair of the firm and of the partner remuneration committee.
