Russell-Cooke celebrates 20 years of the Birth Trauma Association at the Houses of Parliament
On 21 October 2024, Russell-Cooke associates Amy Anderson and Ellie Miles attended the 20th anniversary celebration of The Birth Trauma Association (BTA) at the Houses of Parliament. The BTA, a leading charity supporting individuals affected by birth trauma, was the advisory body for the 2024 Birth Trauma All-Party Parliamentary Group’s (APPG) report, Listen to Mums: Ending the Postcode Lottery on Perinatal Care, which Amy Anderson discussed in a prior article on continuing the conversation around birth trauma and childbirth-related PTSD.
The event featured powerful speeches from Theo Clarke MP and Rosie Duffield MP, co-founders of the APPG’s inquiry into birth trauma, which received over a thousand submissions. Their report, published in May, highlighted disparities in perinatal care across the UK and urged the Government to establish a National Maternity Improvement Strategy to address these issues.
During the event, Amy and Ellie had the opportunity to connect with individuals who had shared their personal experiences with the inquiry. Among those in attendance was Louise Thompson, whose memoir Lucky: Learning to Live Again sheds light on the lasting impact of birth trauma.
The work of the Birth Trauma Association is so important in supporting women and families whose lives have been affected by birth trauma. The testimonials that we heard at the event all highlighted the life-saving importance of community and connection following birth trauma.
