Supportive and sociable from day one: life in the Russell-Cooke trainee cohort
Third-seat trainees Louise Bonnici and Anna Newbury share their experiences of the supportive, social and collaborative culture within the trainee cohort at Russell-Cooke.
Starting a training contract can feel overwhelming: not only because of uncertainty about the work you’ll be doing, but also about the people you’ll be working with. You might find yourself asking: what will the other trainees be like? Will I get on with them? Will they be friendly? Luckily at Russell-Cooke, you’re sure to be with a good crowd (if we do say so ourselves).
The supportive nature of the trainee cohort
When you join Russell-Cooke as a trainee, you will be welcomed into the trainee cohort. Your fellow trainees will be the people you share your highs with after a great day at work but also the ones you turn to on the more challenging days–because, those days (whilst less frequent) can happen too.
Russell-Cooke recognises the supportive role the trainee cohort plays and encourages trainees to socialise and build strong connections within the group. We also have a trainee social committee, which organises social events for the trainees and is funded by the firm.
Committees to join
There are a number of committees for trainees to join, including the corporate social responsibility committee, which secures our place at the London Legal Walk. The walk is organised by the London Legal Support Trust, an independent charity which raises money for free legal advice services in London and the South East. It is a bit of a tradition that the trainees, among others across the firm, take part in the walk. There’s a street party at the end which is a great way to celebrate and socialise with colleagues.
Social activities
Recently we have been go-karting (with a certain Louise Bonnici lapping a certain Anna Newbury on the track) as well as bowling and pizza-making. It’s a tradition for trainees to decorate the Christmas tree in the Putney office each year. However, our most infamous tradition is that we’re always the last ones standing at any work event, particularly when it comes to competitive activities (let’s not forget we were even runners-up in the firmwide quiz!)
Buddy system
We have a buddy system which sees every first-year trainee paired with a second-year trainee to offer guidance. We also have monthly trainee meetings which gives us a platform to share our ‘words of wisdom’ with each other.
Being part of a trainee cohort provides invaluable support and guidance, not only for practical matters such as how to file documents or locating a specific practice direction, but also for emotional support.
Meeting the other trainees has been one of the highlights of our Russell-Cooke career so far. You will meet people who will provide words of praise and encouragement as well as those who will become lifelong friends.
Louise Bonnici and Anna Newbury are currently third-seat trainees in the family and children team.
