I advise a wide range of charities and not-for-profit organisations. I enjoy getting to know my clients and supporting them to achieve their goals in a way which works for them.
Gareth provides strategic legal advice to charities and other not-for-profit organisations on a wide range of governance and commercial matters, including establishing new charities, incorporations, mergers, commercial contracts, fundraising, trading and regulatory matters involving the Charity Commission.
Gareth enjoys getting to know his clients and understanding how they operate. This allows him to tailor his approach and support each client as effectively as possible.
Gareth advises a wide range of organisations including large national and international charities, religious charities and sports clubs.
He is named as a Rising Star in The Legal 500 and sits on the board of the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute.
Gareth Roy, senior associate, has been outstanding and helped us to get charity status and given ongoing advice as required. If the backup team has been needed, he has ensured that the relevant communications have happened in a timely fashion.
Experience
Gareth's experience includes:
- establishing a wide range of charities over many years, including where the Charity Commission has previously rejected an application relating to the same charity
- advising on mergers in the charity sector over many years, including the merger of Breast Cancer Now and Breast Cancer Care, the UK's two biggest cancer charities, and the merger of United Purpose and Gorta, the largest merger in the sector by value in 2021/2022
- advising on charity and not-for-profit incorporations, including in complex situations involving the coming together of multiple organisations
- supporting sports clubs (including rugby, cricket, golf, hockey, tennis and multi-sports clubs) to change their legal status and structure – whether community amateur sports clubs, charities or clubs without any special tax status
- reviewing and advising on fundraising arrangements, including professional fundraising agreements, commercial participation agreements and lottery arrangements
- advising charities on interactions with the Charity Commission, including serious incident reporting and compliance visits
