Russell-Cooke continues to strengthen market-leading regulatory offering
Law firm Russell-Cooke has expanded its regulation and public law practice to provide clients access to a newly enhanced offering for investigations and incorporating environmental regulation and licensing.
The regulation and public law team act for regulated entities and individuals, as well as regulatory and professional bodies, across sectors including; legal and financial services, healthcare, the public sector, retail and leisure, entertainment and sport, and charities.
The newly enhanced practice builds on Russell-Cooke’s longstanding reputation in areas such as professional regulation and public law, and brings together expanded capabilities in:
- environmental law: advising across the spectrum of environmental regulations ranging from the Environment Act 2021 to environmental and nuisance issues arising in the context of planning, construction, waste management and environmental litigation
- investigations and crisis management: undertaking and advising on corporate, public sector and sports investigations including public inquiries, on matters such as corporate governance, professional conduct, sexual harassment, fraud and negligence
- licensing law: supporting clients in the hospitality, sport and leisure, retail and entertainment industries on licensing issues including with respect to the Licensing Act 2003 and the Gambling Act 2005, as well as clients in the transport sector relating to operating licences, taxis and private hire vehicles
Legal Director Alix Rejman joined Russell-Cooke in late 2023, bringing a particular specialism in corporate and public sector investigations, public inquiries and judicial reviews.
In addition, Jeremy Phillips KC, a former senior solicitor and now dual-qualified barrister, has joined the firm as an independent consultant, bringing his considerable expertise to Russell-Cooke and its clients whilst retaining his KC practice at Francis Taylor Building.
With a career spanning four decades, Jeremy Phillips specialises in advising and acting on complex licensing and regulatory matters including: environmental and waste management; health and safety; planning and infrastructure, transport and charities.
Russell-Cooke has a long track record as a leading adviser to regulated entities and professionals, as well as regulators themselves, and we have continued to evolve our practice in line with emerging regulatory issues and requirements across our uniquely broad range of specialisms and sectors – ranging from retail, hospitality and telecoms to the professional services. We are very pleased to be expanding our wide-ranging expertise in these areas to deliver an even more comprehensive offering for our clients. I look forward to working with Alix, and drawing on the experience that Jeremy brings, to support our clients as we continue to take our regulatory and public law practice from strength to strength.
Right across the firm Russell-Cooke has long advised clients on matters relating to the built and natural environment where levels of environmental regulation are increasing, and in retail and hospitality where the effective navigation of licensing requirements is a fundamental strategic imperative. The firm also has an outstanding track record as an adviser of choice for professional regulation and public law matters, and we are now seeing increased interest in and demand for our expertise on broader corporate and third sector investigations and public inquiries.
Jeremy’s expertise complements and bolsters our capabilities still further, and I’m excited to work with him, Michael and colleagues throughout the firm to bring together this newly enhanced offering for the benefit of our clients facing growing compliance obligations and increasingly complex regulatory and licensing regimes.
The regulatory landscape is shifting enormously, with businesses, public bodies and individuals facing new requirements and responsibilities, from new environmental and climate-related regulations to licensing issues emerging from technological innovation and novel business models. I have known and worked with the team at Russell-Cooke for a number of years, which is rightly regarded as one of the top practices in the UK specialising in regulatory issues. It is a real pleasure to further this working relationship in this new role alongside my wider practice, and to be supporting Russell-Cooke’s clients as they grapple with and navigate their most complex regulatory challenges.
