Russell-Cooke reconfirms its commitment to legal aid work
Russell-Cooke has maintained its committed to offering legal aid and successfully obtained a new legal aid contract to allow the firm to continue this vital work.
Every firm that wishes to offer legal aid services had to bid for a contract from the Legal Aid Agency to obtain verification to continue to offer these services from 1 September. Russell-Cooke remains one of the few ‘top 100’ law firms to continue to provide publicly funded legal services to those desperately in need of representation.
Indeed, the firm makes access to justice, and therefore legal aid work, a written commitment as part of its strategic plan. The 2023-2024 Responsible Business Report confirms that approximately 13,000 hours of legal aid work was provided to clients in that financial year.
The firm continues to support legal aid work in areas of law where it views access to justice to be vital to those seeking it and where fewer and fewer firms are able to afford to provide legal aid advice.
This includes work in the areas of:
- public children law
- specific clinical negligence/personal injury matters involving children
- inquests
- social housing (homelessness)
- crime

Legal aid work is at the heart of who we are as a firm, and of our commitment to ‘do the right thing’. Those at the firm who do this work do so because they absolutely believe in the right of everyone to have access to justice and in delivering top quality service to those who have not been dealt the best cards in life. Our legal aid lawyers are highly regarded and leaders in their fields. We are very proud of our legal aid team and of the work they do.”
